  • Operations, finance and HR teams are building their own automation capability instead of queuing for central IT.
  • The strongest candidates combine low-code tool skills, process-mapping discipline and business judgement.
  • Write a specific brief on processes, tools and reporting line, and decide early between a permanent hire and a project role.

Workflow automation used to sit firmly with IT. In Hong Kong, that is changing. Operations, finance and HR teams are increasingly hiring their own automation talent, and the job titles look quite different from traditional IT roles.

Morgan McKinley's 2026 Hong Kong salary guide points to steady contract demand for multi-skilled professionals supporting automation initiatives, ERP upgrades and finance restructuring. Gartner has projected that by 2026, around 80 per cent of people using low-code automation tools will not be IT professionals. In practice, this means business teams are building and owning more of their own workflows rather than waiting in a central IT queue.

Who is hiring

Demand is not limited to technology companies. Telecoms, financial services, manufacturing and professional services firms are setting up small internal automation functions to redesign processes, using methods such as BPMN mapping, RACI reviews and as-is to to-be workflow design. These teams often report to Operations or Business Transformation rather than IT.

New job titles reflect the shift. Roles such as AI Automation Engineer, Workflow Automation Engineer, AI Agent Developer and Forward Deployed Engineer are now appearing on Hong Kong job boards, alongside traditional software and process roles rather than replacing them.

What sets this talent apart

The strongest candidates combine three things employers rarely find in one person:

  • practical fluency with low-code or no-code tools;
  • the discipline to map and document a process properly; and
  • enough business understanding to know which manual steps are worth automating first.

Coding ability without process understanding, or process knowledge without tool skills, usually falls short of what employers now need.

What we see in job requirements

  • Operations and transformation teams are hiring automation talent directly, not just raising requests to IT.
  • Low-code and no-code platform experience is increasingly listed as a core requirement.
  • Process mapping skills such as BPMN, Visio and RACI are commonly paired with automation tool experience.
  • Contract and project-based hiring is common for ERP upgrades and automation rollouts, alongside permanent in-house roles.

For hiring managers and HR

Avoid a generic "automation engineer" job description borrowed from IT. Be specific about which processes need automating, which tools the organisation has standardised on, and whether the role sits in Operations, Finance or a central digital team. Vague scope tends to attract the wrong candidates and slows the search.

It is also worth deciding early whether the need is a permanent capability or a defined project. For ERP upgrades and one-off rollouts, contract or secondment arrangements are often the more practical route.

For candidates

If you have automated part of your own team's work, even informally, that experience is increasingly relevant. Be ready to explain which process you improved, what tool you used, how you documented it and what changed as a result. Concrete examples carry far more weight than a list of platforms.

Our view

This is a genuinely new hiring category rather than a rebrand of existing IT roles. Employers who route every automation need through a stretched central IT team risk falling behind those who have given Operations and Finance their own capability.
