A complete interview preparation plan

A successful interview starts long before you enter the meeting room or join the video call. Whether you are interviewing for your first role, considering a career change or pursuing a more senior position, structured preparation can help you communicate your value with greater clarity and confidence.

Strong preparation has four connected parts: understanding the role and employer, deciding which evidence to use, handling the practical arrangements and planning how to follow up. When these pieces connect, your answers sound focused and credible instead of rehearsed.

This guide takes you through the full process — from analysing the job description and building STAR examples to preparing your own questions, arriving ready and reviewing your performance afterwards.

Understand what the role and employer need
Read the job description line by line and separate the essential responsibilities from the preferred skills. Highlight repeated themes such as stakeholder management, technical knowledge, leadership or commercial results. Research the employer's products or services, customers, recent developments, values and market position. Then match every major requirement with a recent example from your experience, including the action you took and the result. This gives you a clear basis for explaining why the role interests you, why you are a credible fit and what you could contribute. If you have a gap, prepare an honest explanation and identify the transferable experience that is most relevant.
Prepare key answers with evidence
Prepare a 60- to 90-second introduction covering your relevant experience, two or three strengths and the direction you want to take next. You should also be ready to explain why you are considering a move, why this organisation interests you and which development area you are actively improving. For competency questions, build five flexible STAR examples covering an achievement, a difficult problem or deadline, a challenging stakeholder, a mistake or lesson learned, and teamwork, leadership or initiative. Keep the background brief, describe your own actions clearly and quantify the outcome where possible. Practise the examples at different lengths instead of memorising a script, and expect follow-up questions about your decisions and results.
Plan the interview day and follow-up
Confirm the date, time, time zone, format, address or meeting link, interviewers' names, expected duration and any documents you need to bring. For an in-person interview, plan the route and aim to arrive about 10 to 15 minutes early. For a video interview, test the link, camera, microphone, internet connection and display name, and choose a quiet, well-lit location. During the interview, listen to the full question, pause before answering when needed and ask for clarification if the question is unclear. Answer directly, be honest about gaps and explain how you would learn or solve the issue. Ask two or three thoughtful questions before the interview ends. Afterwards, send a concise thank-you message within 24 hours where appropriate, record the questions you were asked and note what you would improve next time.
Our perspective: Effective interview preparation is not about predicting every question or memorising perfect answers. It is about understanding what the role requires, selecting evidence that shows your value and communicating it clearly. A good interview should feel like a two-way professional conversation in which both sides assess whether the opportunity is the right fit.
